Lunch and Wine Tasting at Lievland Vineyards

Stay and Play Summer with Stellenbosch

Lievland, Afrikaans for Loveland, is a historic farm with a long history and a cellar that was built in 1823 and the Cape Dutch house in 1828. Situated in a horseshoe-shaped valley on the slope of the Simonsberg mountain, in the heart of Stellenbosch.

Explore the recently opened and beautifully renovated Tasting Room and Lievland Café. This spot is a noteworthy inclusion in your Stay and Play Summer experience in Stellenbosch, providing an ideal destination for gatherings with family or friends. Notably, Lievland proudly claims the legacy of hosting the first female winemaker and pioneering the production of South Africa’s inaugural barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc.

In 2017, MAN Family Wines, the owner of Stark-Conde, acquired Lievland Vineyards. José Conde, MAN Family Wines’ owner, was on the lookout for an ideal farm for their expanding wine business. Together with his business partners, Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh of Joostenberg, they acquired Lievland, a charming yet overgrown estate in the heart of Stellenbosch.

Despite its neglected state, the team at MAN set out to restore Lievland’s vineyards, aiming to produce world-class wines. The 2018 acquisition revealed a “sleeping beauty” of a farm with a history of stellar wine production but had lain dormant for over a decade. The first wine, Liefkoos Rosé, crafted in 2019 marked the beginning of Lievland’s restoration journey. José, a graphic designer, personally designed the labels, inspired by a heartwarming story of two horses adopting a baby springbok on the farm, creatively depicted with cupid on the label.

Wine Tasting

Liefkoos Rosé

The Liefkoos Vineyards stood out among the vineyards retained due to its excellent condition when they replanted most of the vines. This Rosé, made from Syrah, Mourvèdre and a touch of Cinsault, embodies the essence of “Liefkoos,” translating to “caress” or to love someone dearly in English.

Delight in the aromatic medley of pomegranate, strawberry and raspberry notes that gracefully transition to a vibrant palate. Experience the lively interplay of raspberry and glazed cherry red fruit, complemented by subtle hints of citrus peel. The finely layered palate culminates in a crisp and lingering finish.

Bushvine Pinotage

Made from old bushvine vineyards in Paarl, given that the property’s own Pinotage vineyards are still developing, this wine represents a lighter, more refined style. The blend of Pinotage, enriched with a dash of Cinsault and Mourvèdre, unfolds with lively aromas of cherry and raspberries, accompanied by subtle hints of cedar and vanilla from oak maturation.

This wine matured in second and third filled barrels, yields a palate brimming with plentiful red fruit and a delightful savoury undertone. The dry-farmed bushvine vineyards contribute depth, richness and captivating complexity to this intricately crafted wine.

Lievland Cabernet Sauvignon

Known for its top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine comes from an area in Stellenbosch that truly excels in winemaking. With a careful touch, only 20% new oak is used in the crafting of this Cabernet Sauvignon. Take in the aromatic symphony of pencil shavings, blueberries and ripe plums on the nose. As you take a sip, experience the richness of dark blackberry fruit, leaving a fine, lingering impression and concluding with an elegantly polished finish that adds a touch of sophistication to the overall tasting experience.

Old Vine Chenin Blanc

This Chenin Blanc, barrel-fermented and proudly part of the Old Vine Project, originates from two single-vineyard blocks—one aged 38 years, the other 43 years. Displaying a light straw colour with a golden hue, it releases inviting aromas of white peach, citrus and pineapple. The wine’s elegant profile is characterised by a rich and ripe mouthfeel, striking a harmonious balance with vibrant acidity and nuanced minerality.

Heart’s Ease Syrah

“Heart’s Ease” conveys a sense of peace or tranquility and is also the name of a small purple flower that thrives naturally alongside the vineyards. This flower, known as the Heart’s Ease flower, holds a place in folklore and literature as a potent love charm, with legends suggesting that Cupid’s bow was dipped in a potion of Heart’s Ease.

This premium Syrah wine, made with new oak and a touch of Mourvèdre, has enticing aromas of plum and pepper spice. Its palate unfolds as a richly layered, plush experience, where well-structured and smooth tannins add to the overall allure. The thoughtful inclusion of Mourvèdre enhances the wine’s elegant fruit profile, creating a delightful sensory journey.
