Capetonians are incredibly fortunate to have several nearby wine regions to explore, some just a stone’s throw away and others a few hours’ drive. It’s no surprise that locals have a deep appreciation for South African wines, each vineyard offering something distinct and every wine carrying its own unique charm.
Situated in the picturesque Durbanville Wine Valley, with panoramic views stretching towards Cape Town and the Atlantic seaboard, lies Maastricht Wines, a charming family-owned wine estate. The bustling tasting room quickly fills up with groups of friends and families, drawn by the inviting ambiance. Live music adds to the atmosphere, complementing a delightful array of wines to enjoy with delectable bite-sized treats. Maastricht is a haven for relaxation and enjoyment, and its popularity among locals is easily understood.
History
On February 9, 1702, Hendrick Seeger, a Dutch settler who came to South Africa with the Dutch East India Shipping Company, was granted the farm Maastricht. The farm’s name stems from the early settlers’ quest for fertile land near the Cape Colony to support the Dutch East India Company on their voyages. When they saw the clay-rich soils, it reminded them of their homeland, Maastricht, hence the name of the farm.
Wines
They offer two tasting options: R70 for 5 wines or R90 for 5 wines and MCC. From the refreshing delight of MCC Brut Rosé to the zesty Sauvignon Blanc, the oak-kissed Contour Sauvignon Blanc and the charming Pinotage Rosé, their tasting options offer a delightful array. On the red side, there are also the elegant notes of Pinotage, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, each with its unique character. Being a Pinot Noir fan, the Pinot Noir 2021 was unfortunately sold out, so we will be eagerly waiting for the new vintage to become available to taste.
MCC Brut Rosé
This Cap Classique is made in a brut rosé style from Grenache grapes. It has beautiful aromas of strawberries and cream. On the palate, it delivers a refreshing burst of fruity flavours complemented by a hint of citrus zest. Maastricht Sauvignon Blanc 2024
This Sauvignon Blanc is like a burst of sunshine in a glass, offering lively aromas of tropical fruits and zesty citrus. The wind that blows from the close proximity of the ocean cool down the vines to help retain the natural acidity of the fruit and with each taste, you experience a wave of passion fruit and fresh herbs. Its vibrant acidity and crisp finish make it the perfect companion for picnics, beach days or simply unwinding with friends.
Maastricht Contour Sauvignon Blanc 2023
A unique wooded Sauvignon Blanc that has been aged for approximately 6 months in French oak barrels. This ageing process imparts a delightful softness and buttery richness to the wine, elevating its texture and complexity. This is a limited release wine with only 1800 bottles produced annually. It’s sourced from just 1 hectare of Sauvignon Blanc vines, ensuring exceptional quality and attention to detail.
On the palate you get a fusion of tropical fruit flavours, intertwined with subtle oak-inspired notes of vanilla and toast. Its smooth and velvety mouthfeel leads to a lingering finish, making it a wonderful choice for those seeking a refined and elegant white wine experience.

This is a beautiful Pinotage that exudes the sweet allure of red and dark fruits, accented by floral notes on the nose. Its smooth character, embraced by soft tannins, creates a luscious and juicy mouthfeel that is simply irresistible.
Maastricht Merlot 2021
The nose shows hints of the spicy characteristics, but is complemented by dark berry fruit flavours. The influence of French oak plays a supporting role and does not overpower the wine, allowing the fruit to shine through. These flavours follow through on the palate, finishing with a juicy and elegant mouthfeel.
Maastricht Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
It presents a deep and vibrant colour, indicative of its full-bodied nature. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, including a blend of first, second and third fills. The nose is greeted by intense aromas of dark fruits, prominently blackcurrant, which continue to entice on the palate. A subtle hint of spice adds complexity, resulting in a wine that is both rich and intricate. Juicy tannins complement the velvety finish, creating a truly satisfying drinking experience.
Snack Menu
While Maastricht Wine Estate doesn’t have its own restaurant, they offer a tempting small selection of snacks to accompany your wine. Treat yourself to a Cheese and Meat Platter or crunchy Rootstock Crisps, perfect for nibbling alongside your favourite glass of Maastricht wine. A favourite is their Traditional Dutch Bitterballen, which is slow-braised beef in a creamy sauce, coated in golden breadcrumbs and fried to perfection, served with tangy Dijon mustard mayo.
