Rooted in History
Le Pommier takes its name from the French word “pommier”, meaning apple tree, a nod to the farm’s origins as an apple orchard. While apples are no longer grown here, the name remains a tribute to its roots, now celebrated through handcrafted wines that reflect the character, soul and sense of place that defines the Banhoek Valley.
The van der Merwe family’s legacy runs deep in these valleys. Mac van der Merwe, known for his involvement in several wine farms, was the original owner of both Zorgvliet and Le Pommier. His son Stefan later acquired Zorgvliet from him, where Le Pommier wines are still produced. While both brands are made on the same property, they follow distinct paths. Zorgvliet catering largely to the export market, while Le Pommier focuses on approachable, locally loved wines. Today, Le Pommier is owned by Melanie, Mac’s daughter, and her husband, who carry forward the vision of a warm, family-friendly estate rooted in heritage and hospitality.

Le Pommier produces around 40 000 bottles annually from four cultivars, with their oldest vines Cabernet Franc now over 20 years old. Le Pommier Sauvignon Blanc
The quintessential summer wine. Bursting with aromas of gooseberry and tropical fruit, this vibrant white follows through to a crisp palate layered with citrus, lime and a touch of minerality.
Le Pommier Maraai Rosé
Affectionately named after Marietjie (“Maraai”), the beloved matriarch of the family. Elegant, joyful and spirited, just like her. This rosé offers bright notes of strawberry, fresh herbs and gooseberry, with a soft, fruit-forward finish. It is made with a majority of Sauvignon Blanc and a splash of Cabernet Franc.
Le Pommier Angle Peur Cabernet Franc
A tribute to the French Huguenots who settled in the Banhoek area in 1688. The name “Angle Peur” refers to the historic “De Bange Hoek” or “scary corner,” once feared for its steep passes, wild animals and bandits. The wine features delicate red fruit, subtle herbaceousness and elegant complexity.
Le Pommier Mac
Named in honour of Mac van der Merwe, this blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec is bold yet refined. Expect rich dark fruit on the nose, velvety tannins and a finish that lingers with grace.
Le Pommier Jonathan’s Malbec
Inspired by Jonathan, the mischievous resident bull who once broke into the vineyard and feasted on the Malbec grapes. This wine shows fragrant floral notes, lush dark fruit and rounded, firm tannins.
