Almenkerk Wine Estate – Elegantly Elgin

Over the years, Elgin Valley has added great richness to the valley’s creative heart, and a fervent energy has been invested in creating a country lifestyle for people to fall in love with.

Our Elgin Experience journey for us started 5 years ago when a friend suggested to try Almenkerk’s Chardonnay as he described the wine as “sunshine in a bottle”. Little did we know that the day we decided to visit Almenkerk we actually stumbled upon the #ElginCoolFest. Since then we were hooked on both the Almenkerk Chardonnay as well as the festival. Elgin Valley certainly captured our hearts.

This estate is owned by the Belgian van Almenkerk family. The story of how Natalie and Joris van Almenkerk found their farm began in 2002 when they relocated to South Africa and searched for a farm with just the right terroir. Once encouraged to seek over the Kogelberg Mountain, they found an apple farm in Elgin and today own 15 hectares of vine in productions.

Almenkerk is nestled in the Elgin Valley surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards with the valley creating a panoramic backdrop.

They make elegant, award winning wines using modern wine making techniques, but still handpicking the grapes themselves. The curved arch of the distinctive architecture of their modern cellar is a focal point in the logo and designs.

The modern tasting room has big windows that give you a panoramic view on the vineyards with beautiful art pieces and sculptures to create an ambiance of finesse and elegance.

CHARDONNAY 2017

The complex nose leads with citrus, lemontree flower, white peach and fresh coconut complemented with a floral tone that underscores its minerality. The zesty palate is softened by the lees contact, leading to a lingering finish.

MERLOT 2015

The Almenkerk Merlot is upfront fruity, dominated by red fruit & blackcurrants, while supported by an attractive wooding. It has an unmistakable elegance & poise which follows through on the palate. The lingering graphite tannin structure and distinct minerality makes this a prime example of what cool climate Merlots can be like.
