Rust En Vrede Wine Estate | Visit Stellenbosch

Rust and Vrede is situated in the beautiful winelands of Stellenbosch. Surrounded by mountains and tucked into the hills of the Helderberg on a north facing slope, the terroir of Rust en Vrede is ideally suited for full bodied reds.

The name Rust en Vrede is the Dutch for “Rest and Peace”. The long history of Rust en Vrede started in 1694 when it was established by the then Governor of the Cape, Willem Adrian van der Stel. It was originally made up of a larger property but in the early 1700s, it was divided into two whereby the original section remained as Rust en Vrede. In 1780, the first house on the estate was built in 1780, followed by the cellar in 1785. It was in 1790 when the larger manor house was built.

The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are full bodied wines with powerful structure and excellent aging potential. I opted for the Single Vineyard tasting option:

ESTATE 2017

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Matured for 22 months in French oak, 40% new. The Rust en Vrede Estate 2017 was named Best Signature Red Blend in the Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines South Africa 2020 Report.

Enchanting floral aromas of violets and jasmine with hints of fresh leather and tobacco, blackberries and forest floor. This follows through to the palate with earthy flavours brought forward by dark fruits which include blueberries and blackcurrant, all integrating well to create a lengthy finish with soft velvety tannins.

SINGLE VINEYARD SYRAH 2016

Grapes for this wine come from 7 hectares of vineyard planted on the Rust en Vrede Estate.
18 months in 100% 500L French oak barrels, using 20% new oak.

Rich and complex spices, fantastic raspberry and deep cherry with well integrated oak and tannins epitomise this wine that is indicative of terroir and a true reflection of a specialist red wine producer.

SINGLE VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017

Rich aromas of black cherry and blueberry leading into more floral and spicy notes. Savoury notes emerge as the wine opens up. Fine, grippy tannins combine with a vibrant acidity to create a well-structured wine.

Intense black fruit follows though from the nose with flavours of dark chocolate, all spice and a savoury note of tobacco adding to the complexity. The finish is crisp and dry with notes of sweet baking spices.

1694 CLASSIFICATION 2016

Made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Grapes for this wine come from 7 hectares of vineyard planted on the Rust en Vrede Estate.
18 months in 100% 500L French oak barrels, using 20% new oak.

Dark fruits and dark chocolate are complimented by sweet cinnamon and savoury spice. These aromas lead through to an earthiness from the oak influence. This wine is full of juicy dark fruit flavours and savoury tannins that give balance to the refined fruit purity.

WINEMAKER’S LUNCH

In recent years Rust en Vrede’s restaurant has garnered as much praise as the wines have. Combine your wine tasting with their renowned Winemaker’s lunch, a simple set menu of either steak or salmon accompanied by a glass of wine. The perfect way to spend a winelands afternoon under the oaks. It is extremely popular.

?CHALMAR SIRLOIN – Served with fries, garden salad and a glass of Rust En Vrede Estate

?CHALMAR PEPPER-CRUSTED FILLET – Served with fries, garden salad and a glass of Rust En Vrede Estate Vineyard Syrah

?NORWEGIAN SALMON – Served with baby potatoes, asparagus and a glass of Donkiesbaai Steen

The fillet was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Served with the Estate Vineyard Syrah 2018. Fragrant blueberry, red cherry, and a hint of floral perfume open up to reveal fresh plum with layered sweet and savoury spices. The complex fruit flavours follow on the palate with fine but grippy tannins and a fresh fruity acidity.

Rust en Vrede is classic, historical and exudes understated elegance. Nothing like sitting under the oak trees, drinking amazing wines and a delicious lunch!
