Lomond Wines | The Landscape at the Southern Tip of Africa

Cape Town is famed for its magnificent wine farms set against dramatic valleys of colourful tapestries. Wine farms are a dime a dozen, so it can be hard to know where to start.

When visiting a wine farm for the first time, I often referred to it as a surprise gift. The unknown, excitement, not knowing what to expect. But, when you combine the delicious wines with some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, exciting wine routes, awe-inspiring food in a relaxed setting, you know it will be a memorable experience.

Lomond Wines is set in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom just outside Gansbaai and is part of the Cape Agulhas Wine Route. The estate is set on sprawling farmlands that include a large dam filled with trout, and is home to an abundance of fauna and flora, including fynbos.

It’s a long drive to Lomond from Cape Town, although quite scenic. When you enter the tasting room and you are greeted with warm hospitality, you immediately know the trip was worth it.

The wines of Lomond are known for their complexity and character which are a true expression of the soils from which they come and the unique Cape Agulhas climate which is incredibly cool. Selective hand harvesting, sorting and respect for the individual vineyard blocks is what drives their winemaking processes. These limited-production wines are meticulously crafted from individual vineyards which result in a wine which expresses the essence of the vineyard and the terroir in which they are grown.

Each wine is beautifully named after a Fynbos species which is endemic to Cape Agulhas. These wines include the Lomond Cat’s Tail, the Lomond Cone Bush, the Lomond Sugarbush and the Lomond Pin Cushion. A total of 18 different soil types have been identified on the farm, an incredible variety for a wine farm, and one that ensures the production of some truly exciting wines.
