Eagle’s Cliff Wine Cellar | Explore Worcester Wine and Olive Route

Worcester Wine and Olive Route is blessed with some of the most spectacular landscape, unreal views and excellent wines. It is a world-class wine route worth visiting for a quick weekend getaway or as a day trip from Cape Town. Sunny Mediterranean-like weather and old-world charm with a relaxed country atmosphere. The wines are renowned for their prestigious wine awards, crafted with quality and affordable wines that are full of life.

Did you know just off the scenic R43 between Villiersdorp and Worcester you will find Eagle’s Cliff Wine Cellar? Situated about an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town, this family farm is slightly off the beaten track, but definitely worth the drive and visit, especially for people who are passionate about wines.

Eagle’s Cliff Cellar with it’s spectacular views over the vineyards and mountains, lies in the heart of the Breede River Valley and is home to some very rare black eagles which have made their nest in the cliffs overlooking the vineyards and serve as inspiration for Eagle’s Cliff’s label design.

Christiaan Groenewald grew up on the farm where his father grew wine grapes and was involved in the wine industry, so he was exposed to the wine business from a young age. His father did not make wine himself, but, as a founding member and board member of a co-operative cellar, he was always involved in the wine industry.

They produce a wide range of exceptional quality red and white wines, namely Arendskloof, Eagle’s Cliff, Dwyka Hills and Hoeks Rivier.

The Estate’s premium wines are under the Arendskloof label, whilst the primary estate wines are marketed under the Eagle’s Cliff label. Arendskloof bottles display the word ‘Voetspore’ on the front. This literally translates to “footprints”. The Groenewald family are so passionate about sustainability that Christiaan says when he leaves his vineyard one day all he wants left behind are his footprints and for his sons to follow in his footsteps.

ARENDSKLOOF RANGE

Arendskloof Chardonnay MCC 2019

It is the first Cap Classique made since 2012 and made from the best quality Chardonnay grapes. It is lively on the palate, displaying finesse and complexity with a crisp acidity. Flavours of honeyed nectarines, toasted croissants and hints of pistachio on the palate. It has a long yet refreshing finish and a great bubbly for any special occasions.

Arendskloof Chardonnay Voetspore 2020

Full bodied, with lots of citrus and vanilla flavours. Lightly wooded, fermented in French oak barrels. A wine to enjoy with special friends. Due to minimum filtration a sediment may form in the wine, but this is to ensure the best possible wine and nature friendly.

Arendskloof Petit Sirah Voetspore NV

This full-bodied wine with its deep purple colour and fairly intense tannins offers rich flavours of blueberry, chocolate, black pepper and spice. A wine that will age well but is ready to be enjoyed now.

Arendskloof Voetspore Shiraz 2017

Only the best French Oak barrels are used for the Shiraz. Inviting aromas of violets, ripe plums and vanilla. These aromas translate beautifully into full flavours on the palate resulting in an elegant fruit driven wine.

Arendskloof Voetspore Shiraz Tannat 2020 & 2019

Rich, spicy chocolate plum nose which follows on the palate. Lively pepper and black cherry fruit flavours with well integrated oak. The Tannat is more dominant in the 2020 vintage and spent 8 months in french oak barrels, whereas 2019 was in barrels for 16 months with a larger percentage of Shiraz.

The 2019 and 2020 vintages are completely different in styles offering people a choice of preference. People who enjoy less oak in wines will enjoy 2020 and for those who enjoy the wood components will enjoy the 2019 vintage.

EAGLE’S CLIFF RANGE

Eagle’s Cliff Pinot Grigio 2021 & 2022

Pale yellow in colour with aromas of lime, pear and fynbos-honey on the nose. Light and slightly saline on the palate with flavours of citrus and stone fruit. The 2022 vintage is crisp, fresh and elegant with upfront tropical fruits and hints of lovely fig jam flavours. It’s bright, zippy, with ample minerality and great value for money.

Eagle’s Cliff Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2021 & 2022

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are blended and integrated together from the beginning. An abundance of red fruit and citrus on the nose. A lively combination of acidity and fruitiness make for a fresh mouthfeel. The 2022 vintage is crisp and fruity. Aromas of strawberry and raspberry, with fruit driven flavours and a vibrant finish. A wonderful versatile wine which is perfect on its own or with food.
