Villiersdorp – Home of Villiersdorp Winery

Have you been to Villiersdorp? Maybe travelled through the town? Although it may not seem like there is much going on at first glance, but there is definitelymore to it than meets the eye.

Villiersdorp is a quaint little town that still retained its small town charm. My favourite way to get there is over the Franschhoek Pass. The winding road rewards you with the most beautiful scenery with plenty of fynbos and steep rocky walls. It’s a beautiful scenic route and totally worth the drive.

Situated on the main road in Villiersdorp on your way towards Worcester, is where you would find Villiersdorp Winery. Established in 1922, it was originally intended to produce Moskonfyt (grape must jam) and Grape juice. Today the cellar produces amazing quality wines that is super affordable. The tasting room is next door to the delightful Kelkiewyn Restaurant, a family-style restaurant with a warm country hospitality.

SLOW RANGE:

What is Slowine? It is their easy-drinking range of happily affordable wines to enjoy with friends or family. These are the times that make life special and Slowine is a reminder of what is important in life happens in the moments “in between”, when you are not really “doing something” moments.

Time becomes precious when life rushes by and this wine is an invitation to stop and take some time out.

Since the Slowine are so affordable, it can be enjoyed whenever, wherever. It’s an all-the-time-wine.

Slowine is also a collaboration between friends around the Groenland Mountains, a place where, in many ways, life continues as it has for decades previous, governed by the pace of the seasons.

This is also the location of South Africa’s first Wine and Biodiversity project, called the Green Mountain Eco Route, where work, wine, leisure and preservation of the environment go hand in hand.

VILLIERSDORP WINERY RANGE:

The Villiersdorp Winery Range expresses the boldness with which the winery embraces change, while still honouring tradition. Less interference but still accessible.

This sweet Jerepigo is made exclusive from Hanepoot grapes. Dried fruit and honey on the nose with apricot and typical muscat flavours on the palate. An ideal companion when served with grape juice and a splash of lemon and crushed ice for a delicious summer cocktail.

HERITAGE RANGE:

The Villiersdorp Moskonfyt and Vrugtekoöperasie Beperk was established in 1922 and over the century it has undergone many transformations. As an extension of this fruit cooperative, Villiersdorp Winery is one of the oldest producing cellars in the country.

They honour their humble beginnings as a maker of moskonfyt with their elegant Mosko white blend. They celebrate the new life that springs forth with Kiara, an elegant red blend desicated to the first-born of winemKer, Christo Versfeld. Final Straw is their premium Chenin Blanc dessert wine.

Mosko White Blend 2018

A blend of Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. Elegant and sophisticated with pear and citrus aromas and floral undertones. The palate is focussed with bright acidity that is balanced out with a creamy texture on the mid palate and a long lingering finish.

Bring the kiddies along. Kelkiewyn Restaurant not only serve as a tasting venue for Villiersdorp Winery, but is a family owned restaurant with delicious food. They provide the perfect setting for families with a country hospitality to match it all. The restaurant is open seven days a week and also caters for birthdays and year-end functions.
