Skilpadvlei Wine Farm, located in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region is a must-visit destination for wine lovers. The farm has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, and has been producing award-winning wines for over three decades.
The farm derives its charming name from the legendary colony of tortoises that was found in the vlei in the 1800’s. The beautiful piece of land was dubbed Skilpadvlei and has been in the hands of the Joubert family since 1917.
But what really sets Skilpadvlei apart is their wine and cheesecake pairing. The farm offers a unique tasting experience where guests can sample four different wines, each paired with a different flavour of cheesecake.
The wine and cheesecake pairing is an indulgent and delightful experience, and a great way to explore Skilpadvlei’s wines in a unique and creative way. It’s also a great option for groups, as everyone can sample a variety of wines and cheesecakes and share their favorites.
The Sauvignon Blanc is a light and easy drinking white wine with a well-balanced acidity. Tropical fruitiness with subtle green notes and figs on the nose, following through to the palate. This is paired with fresh kiwi cheesecake which complements the green notes in the wine.
The Blanc de Noir style of the Pinotage Rose has a linear nose that offers notes of musk and soft tropical fruit. This rosé is paired with soft musk and guava cheesecake which highlights the wine’s fruity notes.
The Merlot is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Aromas of blackberries & plum notes filled with soft spice brining layers full of complexity and silky tannins on the palate. It’s paired with Biltong and blueberry cheesecake to bring out the wine’s rich, dark fruit flavors.
ML Joubert 2020 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon / 50% Merlot. This Bordeaux blend was matured in oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is beautifully balanced with berry fruit flavours that lingers on the palate. ML Joubert is named after Willie (the current owner’s great grandfather), Marthinus Lourentius Joubert. This is an elegant wine with a lot of dark fruits and deep flavors and pairs beautifully with dark chocolate shavings and blackcurrant jelly cheesecake.
In addition to their wines and cheesecake pairing, Skilpadvlei also offers a range of other food and wine experiences, including tastings, pairings, and picnics. The farm’s restaurant serves up delicious, locally-sourced cuisine, and their outdoor seating area offers stunning views of the vineyards and mountains.
