Among the gems of this valley is Rietvallei Wine Estate, an internationally acclaimed winery known for its exceptional quality and outstanding value. We had the pleasure of sampling wines from Rietvallei’s Classic Collection range and their John B range. The Classic Collection features the estate’s most celebrated wines, showcasing their rich heritage and winemaking expertise. The John B range on the other hand, offers a versatile selection crafted for any occasion, showcasing a lifestyle of enjoyment and conviviality. We were also fortunate to receive a very special bottle from their Heritage range under a new design, celebrating 160 years of timeless family traditions.
John B Range
John B Merlot 2023
A delicious Merlot that captivates with its deep ruby colour and inviting aromas. On the nose, you will find lush notes of ripe plums, black cherries and a touch of red currant, together with hints of mocha and vanilla. The palate is smooth and velvety, offering a beautiful blend of dark fruit flavours, with subtle undertones of cocoa and spice. Soft, well-integrated tannins provide a gentle structure, leading to a refined and lingering finish with a hint of sweet oak.
Pairing it with beef sliders enhances the wine’s rich berry flavours, while the toasted oak complements the savoury, juicy meat, creating a harmonious and satisfying combination.
John B Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
This wine boasts a deep ruby red color that hints at its bold character. On the nose, this wine offers an inviting bouquet of blackcurrants and dark cherries, complemented by subtle oak spices. The palate is robust and well-structured, complemented by undertones of dark chocolate and a touch of spice. Smooth, velvety tannins provide a balanced mouthfeel, leading to a long, satisfying finish with a lingering note of black pepper.

Classic Collection Range
Rietvallei Chardonnay 2023

This Chardonnay presents a vibrant and enticing profile, starting with its pale golden hue. On the nose, aromas of ripe citrus fruits, such as lemon and grapefruit, blend seamlessly with hints of green apple and a subtle touch of vanilla. Upon tasting, the palate is greeted with a creamy, full-bodied texture, enhanced by delicate notes of toasted oak and a whisper of buttery richness. This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with Chicken and Cashew Nut with Noodles. Rietvallei Shiraz 2021
This Shiraz offers a captivating experience with its deep, ruby colour and inviting aromas. On the nose, expect a bouquet of ripe blackberries and plums, together with subtle hints of black pepper and warm spices. As you take your first sip, the palate reveals a rich, full-bodied texture, brimming with dark fruit flavours, complemented by notes of chocolate and a touch of smokiness. The well-integrated tannins provide a smooth, velvety mouthfeel, leading to a long, satisfying finish with a hint of spice lingering on the taste buds.
After spending 12 months in French oak barrels, this Shiraz has developed a refined complexity that pairs deliciously with Sticky Pork Bao Buns. Heritage Collection
Rietvallei Estate 2016
Looking for a beautiful blend with unique cultivars added together then this wine is for you. This wine features a complex composition of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Tinta Barocca, Cinsault, Roobernet and Cabernet Franc. All the grapes were carefully fermented together in tanks, fostering a seamless integration of flavours.
On the nose, it offers an elegant bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums and dark cherries, enhanced by subtle notes of vanilla and spice from its 36 months maturation in French oak barrels. The palate is rich and velvety, beautifully balanced with well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish.
This wine is both elegant and full-bodied and is perfect for those seeking a wine with depth and character. It is delicious with hearty, rich dishes such as braised lamb shanks or a grilled ribeye steak.
