There is something rather special about discovering a wine with a story that reaches far beyond what is in the bottle. Rhino Run Wines, from Van Loveren Family Vineyards, brings together winemaking and conservation in a range creates to support the conservation in a range creates to support the protection of South Africa’s rhino.
Today, 22 September, marks World Rhino Day, an annual reminder of the importance of protecting the world’s five remaining rhino species. Rhino Run provides a meaningful way to turn that awareness into action, with a portion of every bottle sold supporting rhino conservation efforts, with SANParks as its main beneficiary.
What makes the range even more interesting is the thought behind the names. Each wine draws its identity from the natural world and the rhino species it represents.
Chenin Blanc Cerato takes its name from Ceratotherium simum, the scientific name for the white rhino. “Cerato” comes from the Greek keros, meaning horn, creating a beautiful connection between the wine and the animal it honours.
Rosé Renosterbos draws inspiration from renosterbos, an indigenous shrub associated with South Africa’s Renosterveld. The name “renosterbos” translates as “rhinoceros bush”, giving this rosé a distinctly South African connection to the landscape and the species Rhino Run seeks to protect.
Pinotage Diceros takes its name from Dic eros bicornis, the scientific name for the black rhino. “Diceros” refers to its two horns, a fitting name for a Pinotage that carries one of South Africa’s most distinctive wine identities.
