Elgin Ridge Wines – Elegantly Elgin

Elgin Ridge Winery is situated in the heart of the Elgin Valley and is owned by ex-pat Brits Brian and Marion Smith.

Elgin Ridge Wine Estate sits high on the slopes of a mountain in the Elgin Valley. Beautiful panoramic views stretches over the vineyards to reveal the entire Valley surrounded by rocky mountains and filled with lush, green farms.

South Africa is home to only a couple of certified biodynamic wine producers, and Elgin Ridge Wine Estate happens to be one of them. Being a certified Biodynamic and organic wine farm allows the winemaking team to produce excellent fruit which requires minimal intervention in the cellar.

Elgin Ridge is Biodynamic and an organic wine estate (with certification), producing small volumes of unique wines. Elgin Ridge has an array of farm animals used in the vineyards, including ducks, sheep, miniature cattle and an enormous Percheron Horse, a gentle giant, called Maddox.

We tasted the following wines:

Kosie, the Winemaker and Brian recently launched the #CRUNCHWhite and #CRUNCHRed. These brand new wines are made for everyday drinking wine.

CRUNCH! SAUVIGNON BLANC 2018

Clonal selection was done to amplify lime and citrus fruit freshness. Natural fermentation in stainless steel and aged for 9 months on the lees before bottling. It displays tropical fruit with lemons and apples on the nose, has a good mouth feel with a crisp acidity and long, lingering finish.

CRUNCH! PINOT NOIR 2018

50% whole bunch, natural fermentation and aged 7 months in concrete eggs before bottling. Bright ruby in colour with raspberry and dark cherry fruit core with subtle hints of floral scents. The acid adds an uplifting freshness to the cherry fruits and floral aromas. The texture is silky with well integrated juicy tannins.

ELGIN RIDGE 282 SAUVIGNON BLANC 2016

Pale yellow-green in colour with upfront aromas of ripe pineapple, sweet pear, blackcurrant on the nose. The palate shows candied citrus, pear, sweet melon, lime undertone with rich and textured finish and well integrated acid.

Elgin Ridge wines are named after the altitude of the vineyard, namely 282 meters above sea level. This ensures the Atlantic breezes cool the grapes during the day creating balanced wines with good fruit, fine acidity and minerality.

“Our philosophy of ‘wine made naturally’ begins in the vineyard and ends in the bottle. We produce only small volumes of wine from organically grown grapes producing as close to perfect fruit and can thus ensure each and every bottle with the Elgin Ridge label truly represents our dedication to quality”.
