Toast International Merlot Day With Journey’s End Vineyard Series V2 Merlot 2016

? Journey’s End V2 Merlot 2016

It’s International Merlot Day on 7th November, a designated day to celebrate one of the world’s best loved red wines, which happens to be the most popular wine in South Africa. There’s so much to love about Merlot, with its seductive oh-so-smooth mouthfeel and generous juicy dark and red fruits layered with herbal notes and spices, with undertones of vanilla and mocha, often accompanied by hints of violets, cedarwood and tobacco leaves. Merlot is also a flexible food-friendly wine and ages excellently.

Journey’s End, the picturesque boutique estate situated on the slopes of the famous Schapenberg Hills above Sir Lowry’s Pass Village in the Helderberg basin, invite you to celebrate #MerlotDay, savouring the abundant pleasures afforded by this noble grape, sipping on a glass or two of the Journey’s End Vineyard Series V2 Merlot 2016.

Journey’s End Vineyard Series

With only a handful of premium hand-crafted wines grown in excellent soils on sea-facing slopes, caressed by cool coastal breezes, the focus at Journey’s End Vineyards is very much on quality. All the wines in the Vineyard Series are distinctive examples of Journey’s End’s unique terroir. Journey’s End ‘V Series’ (Vineyard Series), comprises the V1 Chardonnay, V2 Merlot, V3 Shiraz, V4 Cabernet Sauvignon and V5 Cabernet Franc.

In the vineyards and the cellar: The grapes were hand-picked early in the morning from vineyard blocks 5 and 7. Block 7 is situated next to a Eucalyptus forest which has a subtle influence on the flavour profile of the wine. The grapes were hand sorted and destemmed but not crushed. Whole berries were cold soaked for 4 days before fermentation and 16 months maturation in 300L American and French oak barrels (40% new).

Tasting notes: The colour is vibrant ruby, clear and bright. The nose displays complex aromas of dark and red fruits, vanilla, nutmeg and white pepper with subtle hints of violets and mocha. On the palate expect loads of luscious blackcurrants and raspberries and velvety tannins, with the French oak well balanced to allow the fruit to shine. The wine finishes with just enough grip to promise good cellaring potential. An elegant, polished wine, already drinking well. Best drunk until 2026. Only 25 barrels produced

Purchase: The Journey’s End V Series V2 Merlot is available for purchase at Journey’s End Vineyards cellar door, online at and nationally at select fine wine merchants as well as at leading restaurants.
Approximate retail price: R180.
