Kanonkop Wine Estate | Stellenbosch Wine Region

Kanonkop Wine Estate is synonymous with Pinotage and is situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, a location that contributes to the unique terroir and microclimate ideal for growing premium red grapes.

Kanonkop ia a family-owned wine estate, which has been handed down from generation to generation. Kanonkop Wine Estate’s name originates from a small hill (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain overlooking the estate. Back in the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon (kanon) atop this hillock was fired to announce the arrival of ships entering Table Bay.

This cannon served as a signal for local farmers, prompting them to prepare for the 50-kilometer journey to the harbour. They loaded their wagons with fresh fruits and vegetables to trade for goods brought by the ships.

Kanonkop offers two distinct ranges of wine:

Kadette Range

These wines are made in a softer, fruit-forward style, perfect to enjoy now. The grapes are sourced from trusted contract growers in the Stellenbosch region. After fermentation, the wine is aged in older French oak barrels for 12 months, adding subtle depth and character.

Estate Range:

Representing a more complex and age-worthy style, these wines are designed for extended maturation. The grapes come exclusively from the estate’s older vineyards, known for their exceptional quality. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, enhancing its structure and allowing for graceful ageing.

Kadette Cape Blend 2020

A Pinotage-driven wine with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot to round off this wine, all aged in oak. This creates a luxurious red wine that showcases a range of red and black fruit flavours, enhanced by a deep and intricate complexity.

Kadette Pinotage 2020

Ripe dark fruits are balanced by a subtle touch of sweetness underneath. Maturation in older French oak barrels contributes to a refined, robust framework and smooth tannins.

Kadette Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

This wine is smooth and easy to enjoy, with a juicy fruitiness and a refreshing acidity. The tannins give it a slightly rough texture, and the flavours of blueberries and gentle oak spice linger pleasantly on the palate.

Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2020

This wine has a deep garnet colour and has velvety plum and cherry tastes, accompanied by a subtle spice note. With time, it develops a rustic, earthy essence reminiscent of a forest floor, along with a delightful, sweet-fruited cassis core.

Kanonkop Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This wine offers a rich experience with its deep garnet colour and inviting aromas of blackcurrant, plum and a hint of cedar. On the palate, it delivers a velvety texture with flavours of ripe dark fruits, complemented by notes of vanilla and spice from oak ageing. The tannins are smooth yet structured, adding depth and complexity to the wine. It finishes with a lingering persistence, showcasing its elegance and age-worthy potential.

Kanonkop Estate Paul Sauer 2019

On the nose, it exudes aromas of blackberry, plum and dark cherry, intertwined with subtle notes of vanilla and cedar from oak ageing. The palate is rich and velvety, with layers of ripe fruit flavours, including blackcurrant and hints of raspberry. This wine’s well-integrated tannins contribute to its smooth texture and long, elegant finish, leaving a lasting impression of refinement and balance.

The tasting room creates a cosy and welcoming atmosphere that enhances the wine-tasting experience. A phrase above the door reads, “Pinotage is the juice from women’s tongues and lion’s hearts. After enough, one can talk endlessly and battle demons.” – Jon Riordan

Kanonkop Wine Estate offers a captivating blend of history, hospitality and exceptional wines, making it a must-visit destination in the Stellenbosch wine region.
