Spyced is a truly unique Cape Malay restaurant nestled in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront, offering an unforgettable dining experience. It’s a celebration of the Spice Route’s rich history, where the vibrant flavours of the East meet the hearty traditions of the West in a delicious fusion of Cape Malay cuisine.
Known for its bold and aromatic dishes, Cape Malay cooking draws inspiration from Malaysian, Indonesian and East African influences. With spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves at the forefront, every dish is a fragrant, flavour-packed delight.

Spyced is open for both lunch and dinner, but to fully appreciate the experience, dinner is the better choice. We recently took family visiting from Australia for a pleasant lunch featuring small plates, but the dinner option offers something truly special. The evening begins with the rhythmic beats of a Djembe drumming session, creating the perfect atmosphere for a night of aromatic, family-style dishes shared in a warm and buzzing atmosphere.

A trio of golden, crispy triangle pockets, each samoosa was a delightful pocket of flavour. We enjoyed the richness of tender beef infused with the luxurious depth of Wagyu fat, the comforting warmth of spiced chicken blended with sweet corn and the vibrant medley of vegetables. Served alongside a tangy banana sambal and a selection of handcrafted chutney.

Tender, slow-roasted lamb denningvleis, cooked to perfection with deep, savoury flavours that melt in your mouth. It’s served on a velvety bed of confit garlic mashed potatoes, rich with buttery goodness and a hint of roasted garlic. To complete this indulgent dish, vibrant glazed baby carrots add a pop of colour and sweetness, perfectly balancing the dish’s richness.

We also enjoyed fresh, succulent kingklip, perfectly prepared in a velvety sauce bursting with vibrant flavours. The rich blend of turmeric, creamy coconut and zesty lemon created a mouthwatering harmony that enhanced the natural sweetness of the fish. Each bite was an explosion of tropical goodness, with the aromatic spices and smooth coconut sauce wrapping the kingklip in a luxurious, unforgettable finish.
We further enjoyed masala-infused shredded duck, tender and full of flavour, complemented by a tangy citrus pickle that added a zesty kick. It was served alongside soft, warm cocktail rotis, the perfect vessel to soak up all the bold spices and juicy duck. Each bite was a delightful balance of savoury, spicy and citrusy notes, wrapped up in the comfort of the roti, making it an unforgettable treat.

Then of course, no Cape Malay dining experience would be complete without a classic. We indulged in a delicious beef bobotie, prepared with gentle, aromatic spices that blended together perfectly. The tender, seasoned beef was topped with a golden, lightly spiced egg custard, creating a rich, comforting dish that left a lasting impression. Each bite was a warm, flavourful embrace, embodying the heart and soul of Cape Malay cuisine.

To top off our Cape Malay dining experience, we delighted in traditional koesisters, golden and crisp on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, topped with fluffy meringue and sprinkled with toasted coconut flakes for an irresistible crunch. Then, we indulged in a decadent Cape Malay boeber log, its creamy richness complemented by crushed pistachio nuts and almonds, all elegantly drizzled with smooth white chocolate. Each dessert was a perfect blend of textures and flavours, leaving us with a sweet, unforgettable finish to our meal.
