A Sprinkle of Spice | Roodeberg adds a braaiside twist to Easter celebrations

This Easter, the beloved South African wine brand Roodeberg invites you to gather around the fire, pour a glass of KWV’s renowned Roodeberg RedBlend, and enjoy it with meals inspired by the sweet spice and chocolate flavours of the season: Easter Braaibroodjies with Spiced Butter and a decadent Chocolate and Chilli DessertPotjie.

In true Roodeberg fashion, both recipes are designed for the open flame – the traditional South African braai that’s as much about connection as it is about cooking. It’s the most natural setting to raise a glass of Roodeberg Red Blend, a wine that’s brought people together and inspired shared stories since 1949.

These fireside recipes mirror the very flavours that make this red blend such a joy to drink – inspired by its Shiraz backbone, which brings a signature undertone of sweet spice, and the Cabernet Sauvignon component that adds aromas of deep, dark chocolate. It’s a combination that tastes unmistakably like Easter: sweet spice with a dollop of rich chocolate, swirled in a glass.

Created in collaboration with food stylist and cookbook author Elmarie Berry, Roodeberg’s Easter recipes offer a contemporary twist on classics – a reflection of evolution as a brand. Just as Roodeberg has stayed true to its roots while embracing modern tastes, these recipes honour tradition with a playful twist.

“When I think of Roodeberg, I think about connection – around food and in good company,” says Elmarie. “These recipes are rooted in traditional flavour but with a playful, spicy spin that mirrors Roodeberg’s warm, smooth character. And like good wine, they’re made to be shared.”

Easter Hot Cross Braaibroodjies with Spiced Butter

Elmarie reimagines the classic braaibroodjie by swapping out the usual bread for hot cross buns, layered with mature cheddar, tomato, red onion, biltong, and mango chutney — all tied together with a spiced butter infused with cinnamon, chilli flakes, and coriander. The result? A moreish mix of sweet and savoury that plays beautifully with the gentle spice and fruit depth of Roodeberg Red Blend.

Why it pairs: The smooth tannins and fruity backbone of Roodeberg Red Blend amplify the rich, smoky notes of the braaibroodjie, while its subtle spice mirrors the layered sweet spice of the butter and chutney.

Chocolate & Chilli Dessert Potjie with cracked white easter eggs or vanilla ice cream

For dessert, Berry leans into indulgence with a bold chocolate and chilli potjie baked over the coals. Cocoa, cloves, chilli and chocolate come together in a warm, sticky dessert that’sirresistibly delicious!

Why it pairs: It perfectly mirrors the chocolate undertones of Roodeberg Red Blend while also mimicking the wine’s velvety mouthfeel. The acidity of the wine provides a perfect balance to the rich mouth-coating quality of the chocolate.
