Some wine experiences are about more than what is in the glass. They are about place, people and the story behind every vine. At Du Bois Vineyards, that story begins on Sonop Farm in the Koelenhof area of Stellenbosch, where the Du Bois family has farmed since 1931.
The name Sonop is inspired by the way the first morning light settles across the slopes, illuminating a landscape that has become synonymous with exceptional Chenin Blanc. Renowned for old vine bush vine farming, the estate is home to 8 old vine Chenin Blanc blocks, a remarkable heritage that continues to shape the character and identity of its wines.

We recently attended the release of the second vintage of The Sonop Chenin Blanc 2025, an experience designed to connect us with both the wine and the terroir from which it originates. Following a warm welcome and a glass of bubbly, we were taken on a scenic drive to the summit of the farm, approximately 290 metres above sea level. Here, surrounded by breathtaking 360 degree views stretching across vineyards, mountains and valleys, we enjoyed a comparative tasting of the 2024 and 2025 vintages accompanied by a memorable lunch.
Standing among the vineyards, it became clear that the philosophy behind Du Bois Vineyards is rooted in authenticity. The focus is not only on showcasing the wine itself but also on sharing the unique site, the vines and the environment that shape every bottle.

The Du Bois vineyards occupy the northern and eastern slopes of Sonop hill, with two single vineyard blocks planted in 1982 and 1986. These old bush vines grow between 240 and 280 metres above sea level, perfectly positioned to benefit from early morning sunlight and consistent airflow. The vineyards thrive in shale-rich soils that encourage deep root penetration and natural water retention, allowing the vines to produce fruit with remarkable freshness, balance and concentration.
Cooling breezes from False Bay play an equally important role, moderating growth, enhancing flavour development and contributing to the distinct mineral character that has become a hallmark of the wines.
The Sonop Chenin Blanc 2025 represents the next chapter in the estate’s Chenin Blanc journey. Bright and expressive, the wine opens with notes of ripe peach layered with savoury complexity and subtle spice. The palate reveals flavours of white pear and green apple, supported by vibrant acidity, impressive purity and a refreshing saline finish that speaks directly of its origin.

Adding to the occasion was an outstanding lunch prepared by Hygge Restaurant in Stellenbosch. We were welcomed with freshly baked sourdough accompanied by flavoured butters and whipped feta before enjoying a generous family-style feast. The menu featured Cape Malay-inspired citrus spice chicken with charred lemon and green herb oil, crispy potatoes with garlic and herb butter, pearl couscous, roasted pumpkin with tahini and citrus honey dressing, Hasselback beetroot served with lime leaf salsa and yoghurt cream, and a fresh green salad filled with avocado, herbs and pomegranate seeds.
To conclude, we enjoyed Ernie’s Canelé paired with citrus and cinnamon poached pear, crumble and cream, providing a fittingly elegant finish to an afternoon that celebrated both food and wine.

The release of The Sonop Chenin Blanc 2025 was a reminder that great wines are inseparable from the places they come from. At Du Bois Vineyards, every bottle reflects generations of dedication, the character of old vines and the beauty of a remarkable Stellenbosch landscape.
Du Bois Vineyards offers more than a wine tasting. It is an invitation to experience the soul of of the farm, where history, family heritage and old vines come together to create something truly special. From the panoramic views to the thoughtful wines, our visit left a deeper appreciation for the soul of the farm that makes it all possible.
