Nederburg in Paarl is the only winery from South Africa to achieve the top honour for Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2022 The Drinks Business Global Cabernet Sauvignon Masters in the United Kingdom, with the 2018 vintage its Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon earning a prestigious Master medal (in the £20 to £30 price category).
That’s in addition to a duo of golds and silvers attained by other Cabernets in the award-winning Paarl winery’s portfolio. The golds were awarded to the Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and 2019, and the silvers to The Manor House Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and The Winemasters Cabernet Sauvignon 2020. The latter also won a gold medal at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge 2022.
It comes in the wake of Nederburg’s Baronne (Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz) 2020 having been scored 92, earning a spot in the top ten list of Winemag’s Prescient Signature Red Blend Report for 2022. Meanwhile, the maiden vintage (2020) of its Double Barrel Reserve Bordeaux-style red blend received 91 points in addition to a place in the top ten list of the Best Value Reds of The Trophy Wine Show 2022.
That’s not all. Nederburg’s 2018 Heritage Heroes Bordeaux-style red blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon, was scored 93 points in Winemag’s Cape Bordeaux Red Blend Report 2022, also achieving a place in the top ten list.
“That’s nine recent awards for our various expressions of this cultivar acknowledged worldwide as the King of the Reds,” says Samuel Viljoen, the winery’s cellar-master. “It’s motivating to know that our increased focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab-based blends over the past few years is delivering substantial results.”
“Kudos to our red wine team, headed up by Zinaschke Steyn. We couldn’t have achieved these accolades without their dedication – ultimately, for their love of winemaking. Proud of the team is an understatement!”
While Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, The Manor House Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and The Winemasters Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 will be released for purchase later this year, Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Baronne 2020, Double Barrel Reserve 2020 and The Brew Master 2018 are now available, with the 2019 vintage of Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon scheduled for release around the middle of next year.
