Brookdale Estate is celebrating Old Vine Day on the first of August, with the newly released Brookdale Estate Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2021. At the Trophy Wine Show in 2022, the previous vintage (2020) took Gold with a top score of 97/100 placing it first in its category, winning the coveted Rosa Kruger Trophy for best Old Vine Wine.
The award-winning 2020 vintage was a hard act to follow, but under the stewardship of winemaker Kiara Scott Farmer, the 2021 vintage meets high expectations once again. Produced from Old Vine Chenin Blanc planted in 1985, it is another triumphant display of Paarl’s terroir and wine producing status of complexity and balance.
The winemaker’s tasting notes refer to ‘Ginger spice and sourdough unfolding on the nose, laced with pineapple freshness, peach tea and a hint of vanilla pod. Richly textured, weighty stone fruit coalesces with vibrant, tropical nuances. On the mid-palate apricot tanginess balances creamy, salted lees. The acidity is sewn right through, fine and mineral, along a seam of subtle spice. Quince, peaches and poaching pears simmer to the finish, echoing long and resonant with fruitful generosity.’
Brookdale Estate’s Old Vine Chenin Blanc is said to rival the classic white wines of Burgundy. It is a wine with exquisite detail and a nuanced balance and precise equilibrium displaying a bold, impactful flavour profile. Its complexity and balance stands proudly as a wine of outstanding character, especially in a marriage with food on the palate.
Brookdale is a proud member of South Africa’s Old Vine Project – a collective of certified heritage vines. In South Africa, The Old Vine Project was launched in 2016 to certify and promote heritage vineyards in the region. Members of this regulatory authority can be identified through the heritage seal on bottles of wine from vineyards 35 years or older within South Africa.
SPECIAL TASTING ON THE 1ST OF AUGUST
On Old Vine Day (the first of August 2023), the Tasting Room at Brookdale Estate will offer all guests a complimentary tasting of the 2019 Brookdale Old Vine Chenin Blanc. In addition, a special edition 375ml bottle of this vintage will be for sale for R190 per bottle.
